8. LORDSHIP AND SERVING HIM FAITHFULLY

The last occasion in the Epistle to the Ephesians, in which Paul uses the phrase "in the Lord", is in reference to one of his fellow workers,

Ephesians 6:21 "... TYCHICUS, a beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord,"

Paul had a great affection for Tychicus, and calls him "a brother beloved". It is not a difficult thing to love someone who gives faithful service in the Lord. When Paul thought of this faithful brother, he would be filled with joyful appreciation, remembering his loyalty and persistent personal service to himself and the body of Christ. He could be relied on, and made himself readily available. All these things are contained in that descriptive word "faithful". The secret of his faithfulness was his total commitment to the Lord of Jesus.

8.1. ACCEPTING HIS LORDSHIP MEANS BEING WILLING TO DO WHAT WORK THE LORD WILLS US TO DO

We are to be obedient in the way in which the servants were to the instruction Mary gave to them:

John 2:5 "... Whatever he says to you, do it."

There was no questioning when Jesus told them to pour out for the governor of the wedding feast, even though they knew they were pouring out water from jars specifically used to wash the feet of tired travellers. It was not for them to question the command of the Lord. They were probably among the most astonished when the water became wine. They were faithful in doing the work the Master required of them.

When a servant decides to do his own thing instead of what the master wants done, that servant is on his way out of a job. There are many claiming to be serving the Lord, who are not faithful, because they are doing their own thing, and not the will of the Lord. Jesus says you cannot call Him Lord and not do the things He says (Luke 6:46 ). In the kingdom of God, you are not allowed to do the work you want to do. Be sure of your calling, then do it. Be faithful in fulfilling what the Lord has called you to do.

Kingdom sons are given every kind of work to do for the King. Yes, He needs and calls men and women to spiritual work, but do not leave your natural calling without being absolutely sure the Lord is asking that of you. The Lord needs businessmen and women. He needs professional men and women - doctors, nurses, lawyers, bankers, politicians, salesmen and saleswomen, teachers, musicians, scientists - every kind of worker. It is a mistake to think that only Pastors are called to serve the Lord.
