The Unleavened Bread (Leviticus 23:6-8)
All leaven had to be completely taken from the camp, the day before eating the Passover,
called the day of preparation. The feast continued seven days, speaking of purity expected
of a redeemed people living a life free from the leaven of sin.
1
Corinthians 5:7-8 "Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you
may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our
Passover, was sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old
leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the
unleavened bread of sincerity and truth."
Having been cleansed by Christ's blood we must now practice the unleavened life - walk in
holiness. That is a perpetual festival of sincerity and truth. Sincerity refers to purity of motive
in service, and truth to purity of action in service. In our teaching and worship the
unleavened life of separation needs to be emphasised.
The Firstfruits (Leviticus 23:9-14)
Connected with the two feasts named. This waving of the sheaf of firstfruits indicated that
the whole harvest to follow belonged to God - consecration. It spoke of Christ the firstfruits.
1
Corinthians 15:20 "But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has
become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep."
Christ's resurrection was presented to God as an earnest or prototype of the resurrection of
all His people. Teaching and worship is God's intention - needs to emphasise living the
consecrated new life to God. Christ's resurrection guarantees ours.
