7. WORSHIP OF GOD IN SERVICE (Leviticus 23:1 to 24:23)

7.1. SET TIMES OF GOD (Leviticus 23:1-44)

Leviticus 23:2 "Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: 'The feasts of the LORD, which you shall proclaim to be holy convocations, these are My feasts.'"

7.1.1. THE SABBATH (Leviticus 23:1-3)

Leviticus 23:3 "Six days shall work be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, a holy convocation. You shall do no work on it; it is the Sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings."

The Sabbath heads the list of feasts, because it is the basis of them all. As a permanent festival, the spirit of the Sabbath was to permeate all the feasts - days of holy convocations, i.e. meetings for holy purposes. literally, appointed times.

7.1.2. SET TIMES OF GOD HAD DIVINE INTENTIONS

They were to be set apart times.

- Days of rest from ordinary occupation.
- Meeting with God to fulfill His intentions.
- Refreshed with the family "in all your dwelling."
All of these purposes should be evident in our setting apart our day of rest for God - and all our gatherings unto the Lord.

7.1.3. THE FEASTS WERE SEVEN IN NUMBER (Leviticus 23:4-44)

These were observed over a period of seven months. Grouped into three major feasts, namely: PASSOVER - PENTECOST - TABERNACLES. This involves going up to Jerusalem three times a year to keep the feasts.

THE FEASTS WERE: THE TIME OF THE FEASTS:
PASSOVER 14th day of the 1st month. Abib = Mar-Apr
UNLEAVENED BREAD 15th day of the 1st month. Abib = Mar-Apr
FIRST FRUITS 16th day of the 1st month. Abib = Mar-Apr
PENTECOST 6th day of the 3rd month. Sivan = May-Jun
TRUMPETS 1st day of the 7th month. Tishri = Sep-Oct
ATONEMENT 10th day of the 7th month. Tishri = Sep-Oct
TABERNACLES 15th day to 22nd of 7th month. Tishri = Sep-Oct

The Passover: (Leviticus 23:4-5)

Passover was observed to commemorate Israel's deliverance from Egypt (Exodus 12 ). The lamb was slain, but not a bone was to be broken (Exodus 12:46 ). Typified how "Christ our passover is sacrificed for us" (1 Corinthians 5:7 ). (Compare: John 19:36 ). While the very paschal lambs were being prepared He gave His life for us (John 13:1, 18:28 ). On the evening before the regular feast He and His disciples were gathered together to keep the feast which Jesus transformed into the first Lord's Supper.

1 Corinthians 10:16 "The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?"

We celebrate the new covenant in His blood.

Luke 22:19 "And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, 'This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.'"

Our teaching and worship is intended by God to emphasise deliverance from sin by the shedding of Christ's blood on the cross.

The Unleavened Bread (Leviticus 23:6-8)

All leaven had to be completely taken from the camp, the day before eating the Passover, called the day of preparation. The feast continued seven days, speaking of purity expected of a redeemed people living a life free from the leaven of sin.

1 Corinthians 5:7-8 "Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth."

Having been cleansed by Christ's blood we must now practice the unleavened life - walk in holiness. That is a perpetual festival of sincerity and truth. Sincerity refers to purity of motive in service, and truth to purity of action in service. In our teaching and worship the unleavened life of separation needs to be emphasised.

The Firstfruits (Leviticus 23:9-14)

Connected with the two feasts named. This waving of the sheaf of firstfruits indicated that the whole harvest to follow belonged to God - consecration. It spoke of Christ the firstfruits.

1 Corinthians 15:20 "But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep."

Christ's resurrection was presented to God as an earnest or prototype of the resurrection of all His people. Teaching and worship is God's intention - needs to emphasise living the consecrated new life to God. Christ's resurrection guarantees ours.
