7.2.4. FOCUS ON THE REALISATION OF THE TEACHING EXPERIENTIALLY - cont.

Christ's Sacrifice Brings Responsibilities (Hebrews 10:22-39)

We have been looking at our privileges, what "we have". Now we turn to our responsibilities "let us". This expression is used twelve times by the writer (Hebrews 4:1,11,14,16; 6:11; 10:22,23,24; 12:1,28; 13:13,15 ).

Hebrews 10:22 "Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, ..." (KJV)

It means to draw upon the resources of God for all our actions, so that we accomplish as those strengthened with might in the inner man (Ephesians 3:16 ). This is to be a continual drawing upon His might and sufficiency since the present tense infers this.

- Draw not as a religious formality, but in reality and sincerity of heart , as a man drinks deeply when thirsty.
- Draw in heart reliance of faith in the spoken word of God.
- Draw as one cleansed from any possible condemnation by the blood of Christ (Hebrews 10:22; Romans 8:1 ).
- Draw as one whose daily walk is cleansed by the Word (Exodus 30:19-21; John 13:10; John 15:3 ).
Hebrews 10:23 "Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)" (KJV)

Confident testimony is the logical next step of those who draw near. Its a natural confession of His sufficiency and the certainty of hope that with spontaneity we share with others. Our holding unswervingly to the hope we confess will be convincing. We are living examples of His faithfulness.

Hebrews 10:24 "And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works," (NKJV)

The fleshly man provokes others to anger - the spiritual man is to stir up others to actions of beneficial love, and to be zealous of good works.

Hebrews 10:25 "Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching." (KJV)

Fellowship is not an option for a Christian, it is vital for him. The individual believer is not independent but interdependent. To abandon fellowship and interrelationship can be disastrous to progress and development. Do not follow the dangerous example of others, and do no more than have a name of regular attendance. The spirit of what is being said here is seek out the hurting and needy, and help them.

That day that is approaching is the Lord's return (1 Thessalonians 5:2,4; 2 Thessalonians 1:10; 2:2; 2 Peter 3:10 ). Both the climax of all things and the day of redemption are to take place on the day of the Lord (Romans 2:5; 2 Peter 2:9; Ephesians 4:30 ). Christians of each generation have regarded that day as imminent, keeping them expectant and watchful. That is how God planned it. Our own day has the signs of it being the climatic generation - the centuries that have passed argue for this being the case. The Lord's instruction has great relevance for His people today.

Luke 21:28 "Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near." (NKJV)

We are then the more diligently to minister to one another in encouragement and exhortation. We will always have something to give by continually drawing on the sufficient and immense resources of the living God. We are responsible also to heed and give warning.

Hebrews 10:26 "For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins," (KJV)

Those in focus here deliberately chose to go on sinning after fully understanding the way of salvation and deliverance in Jesus. (Hebrews 6:6 ). To reject Christ makes such a person an enemy of God, and terrible judgment awaits them (Hebrews 10:27; 2 Thessalonians 1:8 ). The argument for such punishment is developed in Hebrews 10:28-31. If immediate death was the penalty for rejecting Moses' law (Hebrews 10:28 ) then severe punishment will be experienced for deliberately rejecting Jesus.

Hebrews 10:29 "Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace?" (NKJV)

There are dreadful consequences for any who refuse Christ and His saving work. They will be judged of God (Hebrews 10:30 ).

Hebrews 10:31 "It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God." (KJV)

The writer has a word of encouragement for those who have demonstrated their commitment to Christ and go on endeavouring: They had responded to the light of the good news.

  Hebrews 10:32 "... were illuminated, ..." (KJV)

- They had suffered tribulations for Christ's sake (Hebrews 10:32-33 ).
- They became companions and supporters of others who were insulted and ill-treated because of their faith (Hebrews 10:33 ).
- They supported those who were in chains for the Lord (Hebrews 10:34 ).
- They endured, looking for better possession in heaven (Hebrews 10:34 ).
- They were exhorted not to throw away their confidence and sure, great reward (Hebrews 10:35 ).
- They were to go on overcoming difficulties and withstand all pressures (Hebrews 10:36 ).
- Then, having done the will of God they would receive the promise (Hebrews 10:36 ).
Habakkuk 2:3-4 is adapted in Hebrews 10:37-38 to stimulate endurance. In Habakkuk a revelation is coming; in Hebrews a Person is coming, fitting because the Person is the Son, God's last word to man.

Hebrews 10:37 "For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry." (KJV)

For us the promise of His coming can surely only be "yet a little while" (Hebrews 10:37 ). The writer identifies himself with the saved in contrast to others who draw back to perdition (Hebrews 10:39 ) . He, and may it be said of you, are among those who believe to the saving of the soul (Hebrews 10:39 ). Such are the justified, those who live by faith (Hebrews 10:38 ), faith in the sufficiency of the sacrifice and Priesthood of Jesus.
