After The Melchizedek Likeness Jesus Is Both King And Priest
Hebrews 7:14 "For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda; ..." (KJV)
Jesus came of the royal line of Judah. These verses speak of the Davidic descent of our Lord as an acknowledged fact. In Psalm 110:1 David acknowledges that the Messiah is his Lord, Jesus King of kings (Revelation 19:16 ). Under Mosaic law there could be no priestly appointment to a family of Judah. Kings came from Judah and priests from Levi. The change has come in the Lord Jesus who is King and Priest according to the Melchizedek order (Hebrews 7:15 ).
Jesus Became A Royal Priest By The Power Of An Indestructible Life
Hebrews 7:16 "who has come, not according to the law of a fleshly commandment, but according to the power of an endless life." (NKJV)
The thought expressed is not merely endless life but that by its very nature it cannot be ended. It is what Psalm 110 terms "forever" (Hebrews 7:17 ). Jesus qualifies as the unlimited, effectual, ever-living, indestructible High Priest.
Jesus Is Our Continuing Supply Of All We Need To Live Victorious In A Sinful, Hostile World
Hebrews 7:19 "For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God. " (KJV)
Better because in Jesus we are assured of complete redemption.
Supporting This Superior Priesthood The Divine Oath
Hebrews 7:20 "And inasmuch as not without an oath he was made priest:" (KJV)
The reference is again Psalm 110:4. There was no such oath in the establishing of the Levitical priesthood (Hebrews 7:21 ). Those who have come to trust in Jesus are given unassailable assurance.
Jesus Is The Guarantee Of A Better Covenant (Hebrews 7:22)"Surety" means guarantee. The word covenant is introduced in this verse and dealt with more fully in chapters 8 - 10. Jesus guarantees the fulfilment of the covenant in the lives of all who through believing have become His.
Jesus Has A Permanent And Ever Continuing Priesthood, Therefore Cannot Fail (Hebrews 7:23-24)
Jude 24 "Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy," (KJV)
He not only has the ability to do that, He has willed to do it, guaranteeing as the one who is able to save to the uttermost and because He lives to make intercession (Hebrews 7:25 ).
He is all you need - you can give Him all your love and trust.
HE QUALIFIES AS BEING HOLY (Hebrews 7:26 ). In His Person the beauty of holiness is seen. HE QUALIFIES AS BEING BLAMELESS (Hebrews 7:26 ). Right and holy in all His dealings. HE QUALIFIES AS BEING PURE (Hebrews 7:26 ) - uncontaminated by the defiled He in grace serves. HE QUALIFIES AS BEING SEPARATE FROM SINNERS (Hebrews 7:27 ) - yet in compassion reaching out to save. HE QUALIFIES AS BEING THE PERFECT SACRIFICE FOR SIN (Hebrews 7:27 ). HE QUALIFIES AS BEING APPOINTED OF GOD (Hebrews 7:28 ). HE QUALIFIES AS PERFECTED (Hebrews 7:28 ). He perfectly obeyed the Father and His perfection is eternally established.
