1.2. SUPREME BECAUSE OF WHERE HE SITS (Hebrews 1:3- 14)

1.2.1. OCCUPYING THE PLACE OF RULER (Hebrews 1:3)

  Hebrews 1:3 "... sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;" (KJV)

Having once for all finished the work of redemption; Jesus sits in His rightful position and is actively ruling from the throne of God (Hebrews 10:12-13; 12:2; Ephesians 1:20; Mark 16:19; Colossians 3:1 ).

1.2.2. OCCUPYING THE PLACE ABOVE ALL ANGELS (Hebrews 1:4)

  Hebrews 1:4 "having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they." (NKJV)

Having identified with us in our humanity, lower than the angels, becoming our kinsman redeemer, exalted as the Man Christ Jesus He became better and greater than angels. The emphasis is on His exalted humanity. "Name" in Old Testament understanding, means the full character of a person, none, not even angels can match or excel Jesus whose name is Wonderful (Isaiah 9:6 ), and character perfect, demonstrated by total obedience (Philippians 2:8 ). To bear His name should indicate His living out His obedience through us.

1.2.3. OCCUPYING THE PLACE OF THE PRE-EMINENT (Hebrews 1:5- 14)

Great prominence was given to angels by the Jews because of the involvement of the angels in the giving of the law. Jesus is indeed superior to angels as logically argued in these verses;

  • No angel was ever addressed as "Son" (Hebrews 1:5 )
  • Angels do not rival the Son, they worship Him (Hebrews 1:6 )
  • Angels serve, whereas Christ reigns on a throne, equal with God (Hebrews 1:7-12 )
  • No angel was ever told to sit at God's right hand (Hebrews 1:13 )
  • The angels are created beings, whereas the Son is eternal (Hebrews 1:10-12 )
  • Angels have a special responsibility to serve the redeemed "those who will inherit salvation" (Hebrews 1:14 NKJV)

    The Lord of angels, with all His resources, watches over His redeemed people (Psalm 145:20 ).

      QUESTIONS FOR GROUP INTERACTION

    1. What place does Jesus occupy now (Hebrews 1:3 )? Would you say that referring to Jesus occupying a place above angels, the emphasis is on his exalted humanity, and why (Hebrews 1:3 )?

    2. Christ Jesus is shown to be superior to angels. Can you rehearse the logical and convincing argument given in Hebrews 1:4-14? What special significance does His pre-eminence have for you?
