4.2. CIVIL COMMANDMENTS

4.2.1. RIGHTS OF PERSONS ARE DEALT WITH (Exodus 21:1-11)

BibleExodus 21:2 "If you buy a Hebrew servant ..."

(Exodus 21:1-6 ). This regulation for a Hebrew sold into servitude usually to pay a debt, presents a beautiful picture of a love slave of Jesus Christ.

BiblePhilippians 1:1 "Paul and Timothy, servants of Jesus Christ."

This Greek word used by Paul was 'doulos', meaning slaves - he and Timothy were love slaves of Jesus Christ.

THE PICTURE IS OF ONE BOUGHT TO SERVE

If you buy (Exodus 21:2 ). So Christ's servants are bought with a price (1 Corinthians 6:20 ), and at what a price! (1 Peter 1:19 ). He shall serve six years. (Exodus 21:2 ).

Bible1 Corinthians 6:20 "... glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's."

BibleRomans 6:18 "And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness."

THE PICTURE IS OF ONE SET AT LIBERTY

BibleExodus 21:2 "... he shall serve six years; and in the seventh he shall go out free and pay nothing."

The yoke of the Master is so light (Matthew 11:29 ).

BibleGalatians 5:1 "Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with the yoke of bondage."

THE PICTURE IS ONE OF CONTINUAL SERVICE

(Exodus 21:3-5 ). I will not go out free (Exodus 21:5 ). Attached to the Master by ties of love (John 21:15 ). To go out free from the service of Christ is to go into slavery to self and sin.

THE PICTURE IS ONE OF COMPLETE COMMITMENT

BibleExodus 21:6 "Then his master shall ... pierce his ear with an awl; and he shall serve him forever."

Our supreme example is the Lord Jesus who was completely committed to the Father's love, and said,

BiblePsalm 40:8 "I delight to do Your will, O My God ..."

BiblePsalm 40:6 "... My ears You have opened ... (pierced)"

Exodus 21:7-11 protect the rights of a Hebrew maidservant.

Questions

QUESTIONS FOR GROUP INTERACTION

  1. A Hebrew who had to sell himself to pay his debt still had rights which God insisted on. Do you uphold the rights of those who work for you?

  2. A girl sold for debt was to be treated as one betrothed to her master. Do you recognise that the Church is blood bought and therefore betrothed to Christ (Ephesians 5:25-27 )?
