In these verses there are laid down certain imperatives, which when practiced will maintain and enlarge the fellowship.
1 Thessalonians 5:12 "And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you."
It is important that leaders of the flock are given their deserved recognition. They are to be given the respect they deserve for their hard work. Take trouble to understand them and the exacting nature of their work. What marks out for special appreciation and acknowledgment is the work man does (labour), not the title he has. Labour in the Word in pioneering a new church, and evangelising the lost deserve recognition. Also, Elders, Pastors who diligently feed through much waiting on God and study of His Word (1 Timothy 5:17 ). "Over you" - that is, those who "take the lead" and "go first." They live out the Word they teach. Seeing in them the principles of the Lord practiced, their careful steps can be trodden in safely. It is not easy for the leader to reprove those he sees getting off course - their faithfulness should be a matter of thanksgiving to God for them.
1 Thessalonians 5:13 "Esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake".
When work is well done high esteem in love should be the spontaneous reciprocal response. If that is not happening, then let careful assessment bring the due appreciation. Their unselfish service should release unrestrained affectionate love to them.
1 Thessalonians 5:13 "Be at peace among yourselves."
The enemy is very active in disturbing the peace, through stirring up trouble among the Lord's people. To be at peace His people must remember to fight the foe and not one another (Ephesians 6:12 ). God's messenger needs to be allowed to minister in peace. Every member manifesting the fruit of the Spirit, His peace (Galatians 5:22; John 14:27 ) makes the right atmosphere for ministry and growth.
