1 Thessalonians 3:3,4 "That no one should be shaken by these afflictions; for you yourselves know that we are appointed to this ... we told you before when we were with you that we would suffer tribulation, just as it happened, and you know."
Paul had not deceived them by teaching that believers would be wrapped up in cotton wool, en route to glory. He faithfully warned of afflictions, tribulation (the same Greek word is used for afflictions and tribulation), teaching that they were "appointed to this." No believer should be taken by surprise by persecution and affliction in any day or age. (John 16:33, Acts 14:22, 1 Peter 2:20 ).
1 Thessalonians 3:5 "I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter had tempted you."
Those new in the faith come up against difficulties that arise out of many changes their new pattern of living brings, but they need to be taught that they are up against the devil himself - the tempter - and how to avail themselves of all the protection God can give . Teachers today need to be as faithful as Paul in his. Believers need to put on the whole armour of God so as to be able to stand against the strategies and tricks of the devil. God never intends His people to be uninformed about Satan's devices (Ephesians 6:11 ). Faith overcomes temptation. Faith in God's Word and knowing God is for us, making us total victors. (2 Peter 2:9, 1 Corinthians 10:13 ).
1 Thessalonians 3:6 "Timothy ... brought us good news of your faith and love."
Enjoyable fellowship is joyful good news. Joyful because their faith had stood the test of persecution, their love had grown during persecution - and their affection for Paul was as strong as ever (1 Thessalonians 3:6 ); that they shared Paul's pure, strong desire for renewed fellowship. When our spiritual children have the same unity closeness - open affectionate love for us - enjoyable fellowship has positive effects.
1 Thessalonians 3:7 "Therefore, brethren, in all our affliction and distress we were comforted concerning you by your faith."
All the strain caused by his sympathy with them, was removed by their stand in the faith. The true shepherd suffers with those of his flock who are going through distresses and afflictions. What strengthening joy fills the shepherd's heart when their faith is triumphant.
1 Thessalonians 3:8 "For now we live, if you stand fast in the Lord."
In his hardships for these newly gathered as the Lord's people, he dies daily, as he said to the Corinthians
1 Corinthians 15:31 "For it is a fact that I face death daily; that is as true as my pride in your growth in the Lord. " (L.B.)
Timothy's good news makes Paul live again - his loved converts stand because Christ lives. Paul lives because they stand. Life became abundant and full once more because they were steadfast.
1 Thessalonians 3:9 "For what thanks can we render to God for you, for all the joy with which we rejoice for your sake before our God."
This enjoyable fellowship was so because of their steadfastness. Such who stand strong owe it all to the favour and might of the Lord. We must be giving in return joyous thanksgiving. Do you give others great cause for thanksgiving with joy to God for your steadfastness? Can those who led you to Christ have joy in your standing by faith?
2 Corinthians 1:24 "Not that we have dominion over your faith, but are fellow workers for your joy; for by faith you stand."
As workers we must never forget to give thanks to the Lord - then joy will flow like a river.
